If you are a Little House on the Prairie fan, it can be great fun to dress up as Laura Ingalls Wilder and pretend you are playing on the open prairie or even learning lessons from Ma at home.  For dressing up, you need pioneer-style bonnets and calico dresses, like what Laura and her sisters wore.

If you can sew, there are some patterns available to sew your own Little House costume.  If you aren’t a sewer (although some of the patterns are suitable for beginners, with very helpful instructions!), you can look at buying costumes or pieces online or at local thrift stores.

It is easy to turn a regular dress you already have at home to seem more pioneer-like by simply adding a bonnet and apron over the dress.  Aprons are frequently at thrift stores, so look for one that is either white or with a floral print, although you may need to shorten it to make it more child-sized.

Girls Costumes

There are some inexpensive costumes available in yellow and blue on Amazon if you are looking to find a set where the bonnet and dress match, that come in sizes from 2T to girls size 12 (click on the link to select each size, all sizes are currently in stock).

There is another style of dress, that is a “fancier” style dress that would be used for church and other special occasions, but it comes with a pilgrim style bonnet and not a pioneer style bonnet.  But the bonnet that comes with these dresses is the style that Laura and her sisters used for sleeping in, so you could consider it two costumes while purchasing only one.

This comes in 4 different colors, you click through to choose the style and color.

Bonnets

If you just want to pick up a bonnet, there are four colors available that fit girls size 4-8.  These are the pretty traditional pioneer style bonnet that featured heavily in both the Little House books as well as the Little House on the Prairie TV show.

Women’s Pioneer Dresses

For women, there are some great options in different styles.  We have a full page of women’s Little House costumes, but here are a couple of our favorites.

This dress is available in six different colors with the option to choose with or without the apron.

This is less of a traditional “pioneer costume” look, but rather just an everyday calico dress.  It comes in 4 different colors.
