Laura and Almanzo worked as homesteaders on their farm in De Smet, as well as in Missouri on Rocky Ridge Farm.

Laura wrote regularly about farm life in the Missouri Ruralist.
Public Speaker
Laura spoke about various aspects of her life, such as speaking with groups in the Missouri region about both pioneer living and poultry farming.

She worked at the local Farm Loan Association, where she was responsible for giving small loans to local farmers in need of funds.
