Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family moved to De Smet, South Dakota in 1879, when they resided in the surveyor’s house and then later on their homestead outside of the town.
Laura, her husband Almanzo, and their daughter Rose, eventually left De Smet in 1890, when they first moved to live with Almanzo’s parents in Spring Valley, Minnesota for a year (when Almanzo was recovering from his health issues from diphtheria), and then later to Westville, Florida.
In 1892, the Wilders returned to live in De Smet and lived in a small house. However, just two years later, in 1894, they made the move to Mansfield, Missouri where they would live permanently and though out the remainder of their lives.
