Little House in the Big Woods took place outside of the town of Pepin, Wisconsin. Pepin is the name of the small town that Laura and her family travel to during the book, and the lake that Pepin is located on is featured in the book as well. During that visit to Pepin, Laura collected pebbles on the shores of Lake Pepin and ended up tearing a pocket out of her dress after putting so many in the pocket.
While the little house that Laura spent her youngest years is no longer standing, fans can still visit the site and replica house, as well as a gift shop and museum showing off items that Laura would have been familiar with as a little girl, as well as books and other memorabilia available for purchase.
