Burr Oak, Iowa in the Past
Burr Oak, Iowa, although not featured in the Little House series, played a significant role in the lives of the Ingalls family. During their time in this small town, they experienced both joy and hardship. It was in Burr Oak that Charles Frederick Ingalls Jr. was born, adding another member to the growing family.
For a year, the Ingalls assisted in running the Masters Hotel, taking on various responsibilities to make ends meet. They never settled into a permanent residence while living in Burr Oak, instead moving between rented accommodations as circumstances dictated.
Ma Ingalls, in particular, took on work at the hotel, contributing to the family’s income and stability during this challenging period. Life in Burr Oak was not without its difficulties, and the family eventually decided to leave behind the painful memories they had accumulated there.
Seeking the support and familiarity of friends and family, the Ingalls chose to return to Walnut Grove, where they had previously established strong connections. This decision marked the end of their time in Burr Oak and set the stage for the next chapter in their lives, as chronicled in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved books.
