Today, Independence, Kansas offers a unique experience for fans of the “Little House” series as it allows them to step back in time and explore the world that Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family once called home. Visitors can discover a carefully reconstructed replica of the Ingalls cabin, which provides a vivid picture of the family’s living conditions during their time in Independence.

In addition to the replica cabin, visitors can also explore the remnants of what is believed to have been the well that Pa and Mr. Scott dug together. This well serves as a tangible connection to the past, linking modern-day fans to the experiences and challenges that the Ingalls family faced.

Other notable historical sites in Independence include the Sunnyside School, an 1872 schoolhouse that provides a glimpse into the educational experiences of children during that era. Additionally, the turn of the century Wayside Post Office offers visitors an opportunity to explore the postal system of the late 1800s and early 1900s, further enriching their understanding of the time period.

For those interested in the Ingalls family’s medical history, the grave of “Dr. Tann” can be found in a local cemetery. Dr. Tann was the physician who treated the Ingalls family for “fever ‘n ague” during their time in Independence.

Present-day Independence, Kansas is a treasure trove of historical sites and experiences for fans of the “Little House” series. As visitors explore the replica cabin, the remnants of the well, the Sunnyside School, and the Wayside Post Office, they can immerse themselves in the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family, gaining a deeper appreciation for their incredible story of perseverance and adventure on the American frontier.
