Malone, New York in the Past
Two miles from the town of Malone, Almanzo Wilder’s grandparents – Abel and Hannah Wilder, settled in Franklin County New York. James Wilder, Almanzo’s father, spent his boyhood in Franklin County and built his own farmhouse only five miles from Malone.
In February 13, 1957 Almanzo James Wilder was born in the farmhouse.
The second book in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series was Farmer Boy, which tells of Almanzo’s childhood on his parents’ farm with his family. Also in the family was Royal, Eliza Jane, and Alice.
Missing from Farmer Boy, was Almanzo’s older sister, Laura, who was grown when the book took place, as well as younger brother Perley, who was not yet born.
The Wilders lived in Malone, New York until 1875. At this time, when the Wilder family suffered from crop failures, the family moved to Spring Valley, Minnesota.
