Pepin, Wisconsin

Pepin, Wisconsin, is a quaint town steeped in history, most notably as the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the setting for her book, Little House in the Big Woods. The Ingalls family, along with other relatives, once called this beautiful region home, creating a lasting connection to the area.

Sadly, the “Big Woods” that Laura wrote about no longer exist, having given way to modern development. However, many other features of the area remain, allowing visitors to experience the landscape as Laura knew it. One such feature is the picturesque Lake Pepin, where fans can enjoy the natural beauty that captivated Laura and her family.

To further immerse themselves in the world of the Ingalls, visitors can explore the replica Little House, built on the original site of the family’s log cabin. This faithfully reconstructed home offers a glimpse into the small, cozy space in which Laura and her family lived during their time in Pepin.

Although not mentioned in the books, the Ingalls family returned to Pepin and the Big Woods after living in present-day Independence, Kansas. This brief return preceded their move to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the setting for On the Banks of Plum Creek.

In addition to these attractions, Pepin offers various events and activities that celebrate the Ingalls family’s legacy. The annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Days festival, for example, brings fans together for a weekend of fun, including historical reenactments, pioneer demonstrations, and crafts.

In Pepin, Wisconsin, visitors can walk in the footsteps of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family, experiencing the beautiful surroundings that inspired the Little House series. By exploring the town and its landmarks, fans can gain a deeper understanding of the Ingalls family’s life and the rich history that shaped their stories.
