Vinton, Iowa is the home of the Iowa College for the Blind, which opened in 1852. Mary Ingalls began college in 1881 and graduated in 1889.
The school is still in existence today, now known is the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, however the school closed in 2011 due to falling residential students and transitioned to support services.
The building is no longer accessible to the public. The city of Vinton is in the process of purchasing the school, although plans for the site are still under consideration.
