On the Way Home: The Diary of a Trip from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894
On the Way Home chronicles the trip to the Ozarks, and her home on Rocky Ridge Farm, where Laura and Almanzo would live for the rest of their lives.
This book is written in a diary form, as Laura records her thoughts and their experiences as they travel to the Ozark mountains, to Mansfield, Missouri.
This diary gives insight into the lives of Laura, Almanzo and Rose as they leave behind their family in De Smet, South Dakota to forge a new life at Rocky Ridge Farm, where Almanzo hopes to find their version of the American Dream.
Because this book isn’t written in the same style as the Little House on the Prairie series of books, it isn’t officially considered part of the series, but many readers go on to read both On the Way Home and West From Home after reading the original series.
