The Pioneer Girl Manuscript
When Laura published her first Little House book, Little House in the Big Woods, it wasn’t her first attempt at writing her story. She originally wrote what is known as Pioneer Girl manuscript, of which multiple versions exist, before she turned them into what we now know as the Little House books.
Pioneer Girl was much more adult in nature, compared to the Little House books, and was originally rejected by publishers before she turned them into books more suitable for children. As such, many of the stories and anecdotes included in the Pioneer Girl manuscript were not appropriate for children and were not included in the series.
The South Dakota Historical Society Press published the Pioneer Girl manuscript in an annotated edition, edited by Pamela Smith Hill, with many more included details and citations for Laura Ingalls Wilder fans.
The annotated version is almost 500 pages and a must-have for any Little House fan.
Since then, two more books have also been published in the series.
