Adam Kendall was working at the blind school where Mary Ingalls was taken following her blindness. Adam and Mary promptly fell in love and were married. When Mary is pregnant, Adam’s father arrives, wanting them to move with him into the city, but Adam soon discovers his father, whom he was never close to, only wanted them to move because of the child. When Mary miscarries, his father admits it. Mary and Adam do have a child, but the baby is killed when the blind school burns down. He plans to rebuilt the school with his fathers help, but learns that his father has died, and will not be able to do it. He works on setting up the school in Sleepy Eye.
But after an explosion, Adam wakes up to discover he is able to see again. His sight opens up doors for him again, and he decides to study law, and is accepted into law school with a scholarship. He arrives back in Walnut Grove to set up a practice, only to find his first case is representing a land dealer who swindled many residents of Walnut Grove out of their money. Adam finds himself in a very uncomforable position until he is able to reveal why the man did it. Adam and Mary find that he is unable to make a successful living in Walnut Grove, so they decide to move to New York, where Adam has a position in his father’s law firm waiting for him. Adam and his wife Mary do return to Walnut Grove for a final visit that Christmas.
