Michael Landon, who portrayed the beloved Charles Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, was often seen riding a horse throughout the series. But was Landon actually skilled at horseback riding, or was it the work of clever camera angles and stunt doubles?
Michael Landon’s Horseback Riding Experience
Michael Landon could, in fact, ride a horse very well. Before starring on Little House on the Prairie, Landon had already gained significant horseback riding experience during his time on the popular television western Bonanza, where he played Little Joe Cartwright.
His work on Bonanza required him to spend years riding horses on camera, making him quite comfortable and confident in the saddle by the time he took on the role of Charles Ingalls.
Charles Ingalls and Horseback Riding on the Show
In real life, Charles Ingalls was more often associated with driving a team of horses pulling a wagon rather than riding horseback. However, for dramatic effect and storytelling purposes, the television version of Charles Ingalls was frequently shown riding a horse across the prairie.
When viewers see Charles galloping across the plains, it’s almost always Michael Landon himself — not a stunt double — doing the riding. Landon prided himself on performing as much of his own action work as possible to keep the series authentic and engaging.
Michael Landon’s Dedication to Authenticity
Michael Landon’s genuine horseback riding skills added to the realism and charm of Little House on the Prairie. His commitment to authenticity, from riding his own horse to performing many of his own stunts, helped bring the world of Walnut Grove to life and made his portrayal of Charles Ingalls all the more believable.
His natural ease on horseback became another small but important detail that contributed to the lasting legacy of the series.
