Nellie Oleson, famously portrayed as Walnut Grove’s spoiled troublemaker, experiences significant personal growth throughout Little House on the Prairie. Her love life, much like her personality, takes some surprising turns. In fact, Nellie is technically married twice over the course of the series — though only one marriage truly lasts.
Nellie’s First Marriage to Luke Simms
Nellie’s first “marriage” occurs early in the series when she impulsively elopes with Luke Simms, the son of Adam Simms. In the episode “Here Comes the Brides,” Nellie and Luke sneak away to Sleepy Eye and are married without their parents’ consent.
However, once their parents find them, they quickly intervene. The young couple is marched back to the justice of the peace, and the marriage is presumed to be annulled due to their young age and the lack of parental permission. After this storyline, Luke Simms disappears from the series and is never mentioned again.
Nellie Meets Percival Dalton
Later in the series, Nellie’s parents — Harriet and Nels Oleson — gift her a restaurant to celebrate her finishing school. Realizing Nellie lacks the skills to manage the restaurant properly, they hire Percival Dalton to train her in the episode “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not (Part One).”
At first, Nellie and Percival clash fiercely. Nellie’s usual arrogant and spoiled behavior causes tension, but over time, Percival begins to see a more vulnerable and genuine side to her. Their relationship evolves, and by the second half of the two-part episode, they fall deeply in love.
Nellie and Percival’s Marriage and Family
Nellie Oleson and Percival Dalton marry later in Season 7. Their marriage marks a major transformation in Nellie’s character, as she matures and becomes more compassionate. The couple eventually welcomes twins — a boy named Benjamin and a girl named Jennifer — and continue building their life together with a balance of their different cultural and religious traditions.
Nellie Oleson’s Journey to Love and Growth
While Nellie’s first marriage to Luke Simms was short-lived and impulsive, her marriage to Percival Dalton represented true love and personal growth. Through her relationship with Percival, Nellie left behind much of her selfish past and became a more thoughtful and loving person — one of the most compelling character arcs in Little House on the Prairie.
