Why did Victor French leave Little House on the Prairie?
Mr. Edwards, portrayed by Victor French, quickly became one of the most beloved characters on Little House on the Prairie. His rough exterior combined with a heart of gold made him a fan favorite. However, viewers noticed that after the first three seasons, Mr. Edwards suddenly disappeared from the show. So why did Victor French leave?
Victor French left Little House on the Prairie in 1977 after a contract dispute with NBC, the network that aired the series. The disagreement reportedly centered around terms and conditions of his contract, leading French to step away from his popular role as Mr. Edwards.
Although he would make a few brief appearances over the next few years, he was largely absent from the series during this time.
French’s Role on Carter Country
After leaving Little House, Victor French went on to star in the sitcom Carter Country, where he played the character Chief Roy Mobey. The show ran for two seasons, from 1977 to 1979. French’s move to a new series kept him busy and away from Walnut Grove during that period.
It wasn’t until Carter Country ended that the door opened for him to return to Little House.
The Return of Mr. Edwards
Victor French made his celebrated return to Little House on the Prairie in the Season 6 episode titled “The Return of Mr. Edwards.” His reappearance was warmly welcomed by fans who had missed the character’s humor, warmth, and complicated friendship with Charles Ingalls.
Although he was initially featured in just a few guest appearances, Victor French rejoined the show full-time in Season 8.
Victor French’s Continued Partnership with Michael Landon
After Little House on the Prairie ended, Victor French teamed up once again with Michael Landon for another beloved television series, Highway to Heaven. The two actors shared a strong friendship both on-screen and off, and their chemistry remained just as powerful in their next project together.
