A Faraway Cry – Little House on the Prairie Episode Guide

Season 8, Episode 22
Original Air Date: March 8, 1982

When a far-off voice from Caroline’s past cries out for help, she answers—only to face heartbreak, sacrifice, and the unshakable strength of a mother’s love.

Episode Summary

Caroline receives an urgent plea from a childhood friend whose gold prospecting camp has been ravaged by illness. Without hesitation, she joins Doc Baker and travels to the isolated camp, where they quickly establish a quarantine to try and contain the outbreak.

While trying to comfort her ailing friend—who is also pregnant—Caroline provides care and emotional support through the camp’s crisis. Tragically, her friend dies during childbirth, but the newborn baby survives.

In the aftermath, a moral dilemma arises when the surviving infant is accidentally switched with another couple’s stillborn child. The truth is known only to a few, and the consequences are heart-wrenching.

Notable Moment

Caroline, holding the newborn in her arms, delivers a powerful scene as she comes to terms with her friend’s death while honoring her promise to help ensure the baby’s future.

Key Themes & Takeaways

  • Selflessness and sacrifice in times of crisis

  • The emotional toll of quarantine and loss

  • The complexities of truth and what makes a family

Reflection

A Faraway Cry is one of the more emotionally intense episodes, tackling difficult themes of loss, grief, and ethical boundaries. Caroline’s unwavering compassion and bravery shine through, as does the unspoken bond between women during hardship. The episode also forces viewers to ask difficult questions: When does the truth do more harm than good? And how far would you go to protect the ones you love?
