Fagin
Season 5, Episode 7
Original Air Date: October 23, 1978
“Love doesn’t divide—it multiplies. And sometimes, it takes a little jealousy to remind us how much we matter.”
Episode Summary
Life on the Ingalls farm has changed with the arrival of Albert Quinn Ingalls, Charles and Caroline’s newly adopted son. As Albert begins to settle into his new home, he and Charles grow close—particularly over a newborn calf named Fagin, which they are raising together to enter in the local fair.
While their bond is sweet, it unintentionally sparks jealousy in Laura, who feels overlooked by her father. Laura is used to being “Pa’s girl,” and seeing Charles spend so much time with Albert makes her feel like she’s been replaced in his heart.
The tension builds quietly until Albert overhears Charles and Caroline talking about Laura’s hurt feelings. Heartbroken and feeling like he doesn’t belong, Albert decides the best thing he can do is run away.
Meanwhile, Laura, still harboring feelings of envy, is surprised to find herself taking over the responsibility of showing Fagin at the fair. When the calf wins first prize, Laura chooses that moment to publicly thank Albert, calling him her “brother” and acknowledging that it was his hard work that truly earned the ribbon.
Albert, who had secretly returned and was watching from the shadows, is overcome with emotion. Charles sees him near the fairground gate, chases him down, and reassures him that he is deeply loved and belongs with the family. The episode closes with the Ingalls united once more, their bond stronger than ever—proof that love, when shared, grows even deeper.

“Fagin” is a touching exploration of what happens when families expand and hearts feel squeezed by change. With sincerity and tenderness, it shows that jealousy is a natural feeling, especially in children, but when addressed with love and honesty, it can lead to growth and deeper connection.
This episode also highlights the strength of Albert’s character—his humility, quiet dedication, and the emotional depth that made him a beloved part of the series. It’s a beautiful story of how love can be reaffirmed not through words, but through actions, acknowledgments, and the courage to stay.
