The Lake Kezia Monster

Season 5, Episode 19
Original Air Date: February 12, 1979

“Sometimes the biggest monsters… are the ones that underestimate friendship.”

Episode Summary

In this lighthearted and mischievous episode, Laura Ingalls, Albert Ingalls, and Andy Garvey befriend a quirky and kindhearted woman named Kezia Horn, who lives a peaceful and solitary life in a small lakeside cabin. Kezia is eccentric, independent, and full of stories—making her an instant favorite among the children.

However, trouble arrives in the form of Harriet Oleson, who gleefully announces that she has purchased the property and intends to evict Kezia so the Oleson family can build a vacation home on the land. True to form, Harriet and her children, Nellie and Willie, show little concern for Kezia’s well-being and push forward with their plans.

Refusing to let their friend be bullied off her land without a fight, Laura, Albert, and Andy hatch a clever and comical plan to scare the Olesons away. Inspired by tales of lake monsters, the trio begins whispering rumors that the lake is haunted by a terrifying creature—a “Lake Kezia Monster.”

The kids orchestrate a series of spooky pranks: strange noises in the night, eerie sightings, and even phantom nibbles on Nellie and Willie’s feet while they wade into the lake. But the pièce de résistance comes when Laura, Albert, and Andy build a full-blown monster costume, complete with glowing eyes and towering size, and make their grand appearance at the lake, sending the Olesons into a panic.

Their prank is a success—the Olesons are so terrified that they flee the property and abandon their claim, leaving Kezia in peace once more.

Reflection

“The Lake Kezia Monster” is one of Little House on the Prairie’s most playful and imaginative episodes, showcasing the fun side of frontier life and the enduring bond between children and the friends they choose. It also serves as a gentle commentary on greed, selfishness, and community values, wrapped up in a tale of pranks and teamwork.

Kezia’s character adds warmth and color to the episode, and the children’s determination to protect her reminds viewers of the importance of standing up for kindness, even when the odds seem stacked.
