Be My Friend

Season 4, Episode 17
Original Air Date: January 30, 1978 (Ninety-Minute Episode)

“Sometimes, the smallest cries for help come in the simplest forms… and lead to the deepest acts of love.”

Episode Summary

In this moving, feature-length episode, Laura Ingalls stumbles upon an unusual discovery while spending time near the river: a note tucked inside a bottle, drifting downstream. The note simply reads: “Be my friend.” Moved by the mysterious message, Laura is determined to find the person who wrote it. Her quest soon takes an unexpected turn when, instead of a pen pal or a lonely child, she discovers an abandoned baby hidden in the woods.

Shocked but full of heart, Laura brings the infant home and shares the discovery with Pa (Charles). While Laura takes on the tender role of caretaker, forming a strong emotional bond with the baby, Charles sets off on a mission to find the baby’s parents and uncover the story behind the desperate cry for help.

His search leads him to a young, unmarried couple—a girl named Anna and her boyfriend—living in fear of judgment and rejection from Anna’s strict father. The couple had made the heartbreaking decision to give up their child, believing they had no support and no options. When Charles tries to reunite them with the baby, conflict erupts with Anna’s father, who is furious upon learning the truth and refuses to accept the situation.

In the ensuing struggle, a fight breaks out and a fire is accidentally started, consuming the family’s home. But from the ashes, something new begins: seeing the love the young couple has for their child, and the bravery they show in returning to reclaim her, Charles encourages them to start over together—with honesty, strength, and a fresh start.

As difficult as it is, Laura says goodbye to the baby she’s grown attached to, knowing that she helped bring a family back together. In doing so, she learns a valuable lesson about love, letting go, and what it truly means to be a friend.

Reflection

“Be My Friend” is one of Little House on the Prairie’s most touching and emotionally layered episodes. It tells a story of desperation, empathy, and unexpected hope, highlighting how a simple note can change lives—and how acts of kindness can lead to healing in the most broken places.

With Laura’s compassion at the center and Charles’s unshakable integrity guiding the resolution, the episode reminds us that being a friend sometimes means stepping in when no one else will—and stepping back when it’s time to let go.
