Episode Summary
On a hot day after school, Laura and Mary Ingalls invite their soft-spoken friend Ellen Taylor to cool off by going swimming in the local creek. The girls play and laugh, enjoying the carefree afternoon—but things take a tragic turn when Ellen, while playing hide and seek, is swept under the water by a strong current and drowns before anyone can save her.
The sudden and traumatic loss shakes the entire town. Laura is devastated and burdened with guilt, convinced that if she hadn’t invited Ellen or left her alone, the tragedy could have been avoided. Struggling to find closure, Laura decides to visit Ellen’s mother, Eloise Taylor, to bring flowers and offer sympathy.
