The Wolves
Season 4, Episode 5
Original Air Date: October 17, 1977
“Sometimes even the best intentions can lead to danger—but courage and quick thinking can save the day.”
Episode Summary
While Charles and Caroline Ingalls are away from home on a short trip, Laura and her friend Andy Garvey discover a pair of orphaned baby wolves near their secret tree house in the woods. Moved by their helplessness, Laura and Andy decide to bring the pups back to the Ingalls’ barn and care for them in secret.
The children construct a makeshift pen inside the barn and begin feeding the wolf pups, unaware that their actions are drawing attention—not just from curious townsfolk, but from a much more dangerous audience.
As the days pass, the cries of the wolf pups echo across the prairie—and dozens of wild adult wolves begin to appear, silently gathering near the homestead. One afternoon, while Laura and Andy are feeding the pups, the barn becomes surrounded by a massive pack of wolves, snarling and circling in defense of the young.
Trapped inside the barn, Laura and Andy stay hidden, trying to keep the pups calm and quietly waiting for help, knowing that a single wrong move could provoke the animals. The situation becomes increasingly dire as night falls, and the children fear they may not survive until morning.
Back in Walnut Grove, Andy’s father, Jonathan Garvey, grows concerned about the children’s absence and organizes a search party. As the wolves continue to press against the barn, the men arrive just in time, driving off the pack with rifles and torches.
Though the wolves are ultimately killed in defense of the children, the episode ends on a somber note, highlighting the difficult balance between compassion for animals and the dangers of the wild.

Reflection
The Wolves is a suspenseful and emotional episode that explores the natural tension between human compassion and the realities of wilderness life. Laura and Andy’s intentions were pure, but their choice to keep the pups ultimately endangered themselves, the animals, and their families.
This episode serves as a frontier-era reminder that even the most innocent actions can have unintended consequences—and that respecting the wild sometimes means letting go, even when it’s hard.
