Times of Change
Season 4, Episode 2
Original Air Date: September 19, 1977
“The city promised excitement and opportunity—but the heart still belongs where the soul is at peace.”
Episode Summary
In a rare departure from Walnut Grove, Charles Ingalls and his eldest daughter Mary set out on their first journey to Chicago, a trip filled with anticipation and hope. The trip is meant to be a time of discovery—Mary is visiting an old friend who has secured her a temporary job at a hotel, and Charles hopes to reconnect with an old buddy who may offer a business opportunity.
At first, Mary is dazzled by the city—the towering buildings, the stylish people, and the sophistication of urban life are unlike anything she’s ever seen in Walnut Grove. But it doesn’t take long before the shine begins to fade, and she starts to notice that the glamour is only surface-deep.
Mary’s friend, once sweet and kind, has changed under the pressure of city life, becoming shallow and status-driven. Meanwhile, Charles discovers that his old friend is not as honest or upright as he remembered, caught up in the ruthless, cutthroat world of big-city business and politics.
Both father and daughter are disappointed to realize that the city’s promise of success often comes at the cost of personal integrity, and that values like honesty, hard work, and kindness are harder to find in a place where appearances seem to matter more than character.
Feeling out of place and disillusioned, Charles and Mary decide to return home, grateful for the simple but meaningful life they have in Walnut Grove. Their journey reminds them that true richness isn’t found in wealth or status, but in community, character, and love.

Reflection
Times of Change is a quiet but powerful episode that explores the emotional impact of leaving home and seeing the world with new eyes. Mary’s youthful idealism is tested, while Charles faces the painful realization that even trusted friends can change when their environment does.
For both of them, the trip to Chicago becomes a journey not just through geography, but through self-discovery. It reinforces the core values that Little House on the Prairie is known for—family, honesty, humility, and the quiet strength of a life lived with purpose.
