Country Girls
Season 1, Episode 2
Original Air Date: September 18, 1974
Episode Summary:
In this heartwarming second episode of Little House on the Prairie, Laura and Mary Ingalls attend school for the very first time in Walnut Grove. The schoolhouse, led by the kind and patient Miss Beadle, is a new and intimidating place for the girls, who are eager to learn but unfamiliar with formal education.
At school, they meet Nellie Oleson, the wealthy and snobbish daughter of the town’s mercantile owners. Nellie immediately singles them out, calling them “country girls” with a sneer—marking the beginning of what will become one of the series’ most iconic rivalries.
Laura, unsure of herself in this new environment, struggles to find confidence in her writing. When the class is assigned an essay about their mothers, she is too shy to put her feelings into words on paper. But when the moment comes, Laura stands up and delivers her essay from the heart, moving the entire room with her sincere tribute to Ma (Caroline Ingalls). Her honesty and love shine through, even without pen and paper.
Key Themes:
Overcoming insecurity in new environments
The value of heartfelt expression over perfection
Sibling support and encouragement
Class and social differences in frontier communities
Notable Quote:
“She’s always there to take care of us. And she helps us, and she loves us… and I love her.” – Laura Ingalls
