Original Air Date: November 6, 1974
“Even when they’re not with us, a mother’s heart never takes a holiday.”
Episode Summary:
In this lighthearted and endearing episode, Charles surprises Caroline with a chance to take a break from her daily responsibilities and enjoy a second honeymoon—a romantic getaway just for the two of them. It’s a rare opportunity for “Ma” to have time to herself and reconnect with Charles away from the demands of farm and family life.
Back in Walnut Grove, Mr. Edwards steps in to take care of the Ingalls children while their parents are away. At first, things seem manageable—but he quickly learns that running a household with Laura, Mary, and little Carrie is no easy task. Hilarity ensues when Carrie climbs onto the roof, and Mr. Edwards accidentally nails her dress to it while doing repairs, leaving her stuck and calling for help.
Meanwhile, the girls are introduced to the infamous “rattlesnake stew”—a signature Edwards dish that leaves Mary and Laura both horrified and amused.
As for Caroline and Charles, their getaway doesn’t go quite as planned. While Charles is eager for romance and relaxation, Caroline can’t stop worrying about the children, proving that a mother’s heart is never truly off-duty.
