The Lord Is My Shepherd
Season 1, Episode 13 (Two-Hour Special)
Original Air Date: December 18, 1974
“Sometimes the Lord doesn’t give us what we want—but what we need most of all.” – Jonathan
Episode Summary:
In this deeply emotional and spiritually moving two-hour special, the Ingalls family experiences both joy and tragedy. Caroline becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby boy, Charles Ingalls Jr., filling the family with excitement and love. But while everyone is doting on the new baby, Laura begins to feel left out, believing that her Pa’s love has shifted away from her and toward her baby brother.
Struggling with jealousy and confusion, Laura’s emotional turmoil intensifies when the baby falls seriously ill and tragically passes away. Overwhelmed with guilt and believing that her resentment and failure to pray caused his death, Laura silently bears the weight of the tragedy. In her grief, she speaks with Reverend Alden, who offers gentle spiritual guidance—but Laura becomes convinced she must seek God herself to ask for a miracle.
Determined to make things right, Laura runs away to the mountains, hoping to find a closeness to God she believes can only be earned through solitude and sacrifice. There, she meets Jonathan, a kind, gentle hermit (played by Ernest Borgnine) who provides food, shelter, and—most importantly—wisdom. Jonathan becomes a spiritual guide, helping Laura understand that God’s love is not about earning miracles, but about acceptance, faith, and grace.
Back in Walnut Grove, Charles and Mr. Edwards are frantic, searching the countryside for Laura. As they follow clues that lead them toward the mountain, Laura’s spiritual journey reaches a turning point. When Charles finally finds her, Laura tries to run again, afraid she’s still to blame. But Jonathan gently stops her and says something profound: “God wants you to go back with your Pa.”
The episode ends with Laura returning home and embracing both her father’s love and her faith, stronger for the journey she has taken.

Reflection:
The Lord Is My Shepherd is one of the most powerful and soul-stirring episodes in the entire Little House on the Prairie series. It tackles grief, spiritual doubt, and childhood guilt with incredible sensitivity. Laura’s emotional journey from jealousy to guilt to acceptance is something both children and adults can relate to, especially when grappling with the complexities of love and loss. Jonathan, though a stranger, offers the kind of divine wisdom and comfort that many seek in their darkest moments.
This episode reminds us that faith is not about perfection, but about connection—between family, community, and the heart of God.
