The Raccoon
Season 1, Episode 10
Original Air Date: November 20, 1974
“Sometimes love means letting go—even when it hurts.”
Episode Summary:
In this emotionally charged episode, Laura Ingalls finds a baby raccoon and begs her father to let her keep it as a pet. Though initially reluctant, Charles allows her to adopt the raccoon—whom she lovingly names Jasper—with the condition that she care for it properly.
As Jasper grows, his wild instincts begin to show. When he bites both Laura and their dog Jack, Charles realizes that keeping a wild animal may have been a mistake. Jasper escapes, and the family is soon thrown into crisis when a raccoon returns and kills one of the chickens—prompting Charles to shoot the animal to protect the family.
After the raccoon is tested, Charles and Doc Baker receive terrible news: the animal had rabies. Fearing that Jasper may have been infected and passed the disease to Laura and Jack through his bites, the family must wait in anxious uncertainty. Laura is confined to bed, and Jack is tied up, while the family dreads the possibility of the illness progressing.
In a relieving twist, it is eventually discovered that the raccoon Charles killed was not Jasper—and Laura and Jack are safe. The episode ends with lessons learned about the risks of taming wild animals, and the deep, sometimes painful bond between children and the creatures they love.
