Episode Summary
In “A New Beginning,” longtime Little House characters Jonathan Garvey and his son Andy make a bold decision to leave Walnut Grove behind and start fresh in the nearby town of Sleepy Eye. With hopes of finding purpose and rebuilding their lives following the death of Alice Garvey, the two begin running a freight business, eager to move forward.
However, their dreams of a new life are quickly challenged when a gang of teenage thieves begins targeting local merchants—and the Garveys’ business becomes a repeat victim of these robberies. Frustrated with the lack of law enforcement action and determined to protect his livelihood, Jonathan accepts a position as deputy sheriff.
His sense of duty puts a target on his back, not only from the criminals themselves but also when Andy becomes the victim of retaliation. After Jonathan arrests the gang’s ringleader, Andy is viciously beaten in a revenge attack, pushing Jonathan to the brink as he confronts what justice really means in a lawless town.

Why This Episode Matters
“A New Beginning” marks a major turning point in the Little House series, particularly for the Garvey family. With Alice Garvey’s death in the previous season (in “May We Make Them Proud”), this episode explores how grief, change, and courage intersect. Jonathan’s move to Sleepy Eye represents both a literal and emotional relocation—he’s searching for healing, stability, and purpose.
The episode also delves into the challenges of parenthood, as Jonathan must juggle his duty as a lawman with his protective instincts as a father. The tension between doing what’s right and doing what’s safe is a central theme.
In the broader arc of the show, this episode helps expand the Little House universe beyond Walnut Grove and illustrates the ongoing hardships of pioneer life, even in new towns.
Fun Fact
Although this episode was seen as a way to shift the Garveys into a new chapter, actor Merlin Olsen (Jonathan Garvey) would go on to star in a Little House spinoff pilot later that year, titled Father Murphy, which shared similar values and frontier themes.
