Original Air Date: November 24, 1980
Family pride and friendly competition collide when Charles and Almanzo challenge each other to a race to Sleepy Eye—with comic consequences for both husbands.
Episode Summary
In “The In-Laws,” Charles Ingalls and his new son-in-law, Almanzo Wilder, decide to partner up on a business venture delivering goods to the nearby town of Sleepy Eye. While the plan starts out smoothly, it doesn’t take long before a little father-in-law/son-in-law rivalry kicks in. Each man insists he knows a faster route—and they decide to settle the debate with a friendly but competitive race to see who can deliver their load first.
Almanzo’s route proves physically demanding, leading to trouble with steep hills and broken harness gear, while Charles’s shortcut runs into legal trouble when he tries to cross private property. Both men stubbornly refuse to admit they might have miscalculated, and each faces his own humorous and frustrating obstacles along the way.
By the time they reach Sleepy Eye, neither has arrived on time, and the entire job is a bust. But the episode ends on a light-hearted note as both men, humbled and smiling, must return home and cook dinner for Caroline and Laura as a form of “penance” for their overconfident wager.
