The Nephews – Little House on the Prairie Episode Guide

Season 7, Episode 15
Original Air Date: January 19, 1981

Laura and Almanzo get a crash course in parenting when two wild little boys come to visit—and turn Walnut Grove upside down.

Episode Summary

In “The Nephews,” newlyweds Laura and Almanzo Wilder agree to look after Almanzo’s young nephews while his brother Royal Wilder and his wife take a much-needed vacation. At first, the idea of playing temporary parents sounds manageable—after all, how much trouble could two boys possibly be?

They soon find out.

The nephews are unruly, loud, and constantly into mischief, causing mayhem both at home and around town. From food fights to farm accidents, Laura and Almanzo struggle to maintain order and discipline. As the chaos builds, so does Laura’s frustration—and so do the laughs for viewers.

Despite the boys’ antics, Laura begins to reflect on the challenges of parenting, realizing that discipline requires more than scolding—it requires patience, consistency, and even compassion. By the end of the episode, a balance is struck, and the boys begin to show signs of improvement, just in time for Royal and his wife to return.

Themes & Notable Moments

  • Parenting & Responsibility: Laura and Almanzo face the reality of child-rearing—especially when the kids aren’t your own.

  • Comedy Through Chaos: This episode leans more comedic than dramatic, offering humorous relief in the midst of the more serious episodes of the season.

  • Laura’s Growth: Laura gains a deeper understanding of what it means to raise children, setting the stage for her own future as a mother.

  • Royal Wilder: Introduces a version of Royal Wilder that, as noted by fans, differs from the one who will appear later in the series—marking a rare continuity break in the show.

Why It’s Memorable

This episode stands out as one of the lighter, more humorous entries in Little House on the Prairie’s seventh season. It blends heartfelt lessons about family dynamics with laugh-out-loud moments, making it an enjoyable watch for both adults and children. It also gives fans a closer look at Laura and Almanzo’s evolving relationship, particularly how they face challenges as a team.
