Back to School (Part Two)
Season 6, Episode 2
Original Air Date: September 24, 1979
“Laura wants to be seen as a woman—but growing up comes with more than just a graduation exam.”
Episode Summary
In the emotional second part of the two-episode arc, Laura Ingalls’ crush on Almanzo Wilder intensifies, and she becomes determined to prove that she’s not just a schoolgirl in his eyes—she’s a young woman, ready to stand beside him. To earn her independence and seem more mature, Laura decides to take the school graduation exam so she can leave school early and start a new chapter in life.
But there’s trouble in the books—literally. Laura makes the mistake of turning to Nellie Oleson for help. Still furious about the cinnamon chicken debacle that cost her a chance with Almanzo, Nellie gives Laura the wrong materials to study, sabotaging her chances of passing the test. When Laura realizes the betrayal during the exam, it’s too late—she fails.
Angry and humiliated, Laura confronts Nellie outside, and the two end up in a classic Little House mud-wrestling match. The scene ends in a splashing, rolling brawl until Almanzo arrives and pulls them apart. With Laura’s clothes ruined, he offers to take her home to clean up and dry her dress, lending her a robe in the meantime.
But when Nellie tattles to Caroline and Charles, the situation takes a serious turn. Charles, misunderstanding what’s happened, rushes over to Almanzo’s and finds his daughter in another man’s robe—and throws a punch in protective fatherly fury. Almanzo, rather than escalating the situation, calmly tells Charles he understands why he reacted that way.
In one of the episode’s most memorable scenes, Laura defends herself fiercely, declaring in front of both men:
“I am not a little girl. I am a woman!”
The episode ends with a turning point—both for Laura’s personal growth and for the evolution of her connection with Almanzo.

Reflection
“Back to School (Part Two)” is a standout episode that blends drama, humor, and emotional conflict, capturing the tension of adolescence in a pioneer world. It’s not just a romance story—it’s a coming-of-age narrative, showing how Laura begins to assert her independence, test her boundaries, and learn that being grown up isn’t about age—it’s about responsibility and self-respect.
This episode also shows the protective instincts of Charles, who struggles to reconcile the image of his little girl with the reality of the confident, determined young woman she is becoming. And for fans of the Laura-Almanzo storyline, this is a pivotal moment that cements their connection.
