Episode Summary
In “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not (Part One),” the season finale of Season 6, Laura Ingalls and Almanzo Wilder’s relationship reaches a dramatic turning point. Deeply in love, Almanzo proposes to Laura, eager to build a life with her. But Charles Ingalls isn’t ready to let his youngest daughter go. He believes Laura is too young for marriage and insists that they wait until she turns eighteen, which is still two years away.
Devastated by Charles’ refusal to give his blessing, Almanzo gives Laura an ultimatum—marry him now or wait and lose him. Caught between her love for Almanzo and her deep respect for her father, Laura chooses to stand by her Pa’s wishes. Heartbroken, Almanzo leaves Walnut Grove, leaving Laura to pick up the pieces of her shattered heart.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Oleson hires Percival Dalton to train Nellie in the proper etiquette and responsibilities of running the new restaurant. Nellie’s bratty and entitled behavior clashes immediately with Percival’s strict, no-nonsense style. But their fiery interactions soon spark something unexpected: Nellie starts to fall in love with him, much to her mother’s surprise.
In Sleepy Eye, Adam receives news of his father’s death, along with the disappointing revelation that there will be no funding for a blind school in Walnut Grove. Instead of letting the dream die, Adam and Mary begin setting up the new school in Sleepy Eye. Laura, desperate to distract herself from thoughts of Almanzo, offers to help—and unexpectedly finds herself face-to-face with him once more.

It also introduces two new important arcs: the beginnings of Nellie and Percival’s romance—a relationship that softens and transforms Nellie’s character—and the establishment of a new blind school in Sleepy Eye, shifting Mary and Adam’s journey into a fresh chapter.
