The Preacher Takes a Wife – Little House on the Prairie Episode Guide

Season 6, Episode 6
Original Air Date: October 22, 1979

“Love doesn’t need permission—and kindness is the best sermon of all.”

Episode Summary

In this heartfelt episode of Little House on the Prairie, Reverend Robert Alden, the beloved pastor of Walnut Grove, finds himself at the center of unexpected gossip and controversy when he begins spending time with a kind widow named Anna Craig. What begins as simple dinners and gentle companionship soon turns into something deeper—a quiet, blossoming romance.

Anna and Reverend Alden grow closer, sharing values, memories, and dreams of a life together. When the Reverend announces his intention to marry Anna, most of the town supports him—but one person isn’t pleased.

Harriet Oleson, who often tries to wield influence over Walnut Grove’s affairs, is scandalized by the news. She believes a minister should remain unmarried and threatens to withdraw her support and financial backing from the church if the couple goes through with the wedding. Her meddling creates division in the congregation and pressure on Reverend Alden to reconsider his personal happiness for the sake of keeping peace.

As the community watches and whispers, Reverend Alden must choose between love and duty, all while staying true to his moral compass. With gentle encouragement from Anna and quiet support from other townsfolk—including Charles and Caroline Ingalls—he ultimately makes a decision based not on fear, but on faith.

In the end, Reverend Alden and Mrs. Craig go through with the wedding, proving that even in a small town with big opinions, love and integrity can triumph over judgment.

Key Themes

  • Love and relationships later in life

  • Standing up to community pressure

  • Church politics and moral courage

  • Judgment vs. compassion

  • Personal happiness vs. public expectation

Notable Moment

Reverend Alden: “If love is a blessing from God, how can it be wrong to accept it?”
These words silence the critics and affirm his right to love and be loved.

Reflection

“The Preacher Takes a Wife” is a quietly powerful episode that explores the complexities of love, especially for those who are often expected to sacrifice their personal lives for the sake of others. Reverend Alden, typically portrayed as a calm and steady figure, becomes a central character with emotional depth, facing judgment and pressure with grace and conviction.

Anna Craig’s character offers a refreshing view of middle-aged romance, challenging the notion that love is only for the young. Together, she and Reverend Alden remind viewers that true love is about companionship, shared values, and mutual respect—at any age.
