Bunny
Season 3, Episode 4
Original Air Date: October 18, 1976
“The truth has a way of rolling downhill—sometimes literally.”
Episode Summary
Laura Ingalls’ beloved horse, Bunny, takes center stage in this dramatic and humorous episode. When Nellie Oleson, in one of her many attempts to show off, insists on riding Bunny without experience, she ends up falling and claiming to be paralyzed. While Laura had nothing to do with the accident, Harriet Oleson immediately places the blame on her—and demands that Bunny be put down.
Deeply upset, Laura does what she can to protect Bunny, secretly hiding her in the barn with the help of her family. But Laura is also struggling with guilt, even though it wasn’t her fault. Determined to make amends and “do the right thing,” Laura humbles herself by serving Nellie’s every whim—bringing her treats, pushing her around in a wheelchair, and following orders.
However, Laura begins to suspect something isn’t quite right. Nellie seems to enjoy the attention a bit too much, and her physical condition is suspiciously selective. Eventually, Laura catches Nellie faking her paralysis, moving around with ease when she thinks no one is watching.
Determined to expose the lie, Laura cheerfully suggests they go outside for fresh air, wheeling Nellie to the top of a grassy hill. With a “whoops!” and a little push, Laura sends the wheelchair careening downhill, right into a creek. The whole town watches as Nellie stands up, screaming and furious, her “paralysis” miraculously healed.
Harriet Oleson, caught off guard, is so overwhelmed by her daughter’s sudden recovery that she praises Laura for the “miracle.” Meanwhile, Nels Oleson, ever the voice of reason, returns Bunny to Laura, acknowledging her genuine love and sense of justice.

Reflection
Bunny is a fan-favorite episode that blends emotional stakes with humor and heart. Laura’s struggle to do the right thing—even when wrongly accused—shows her strength of character. Meanwhile, Nellie’s antics are classic Oleson drama, reminding us that lies may get attention, but the truth eventually comes out—especially when Laura Ingalls is involved.
The episode also celebrates the deep bond between Laura and her horse, reinforcing the theme that love and loyalty—whether for family, friends, or animals—deserve protection, even in the face of injustice.
