Original Air Date: November 29, 1976
“Sometimes love means knowing when to let go—even if he’s a goat.”
Episode Summary
In one of the lighthearted and comedic episodes of Little House on the Prairie, Laura Ingalls finds herself in over her head when she’s talked into taking ownership of a mischievous billy goat named Fred while walking home from school.
At first, Laura is charmed by Fred’s goofy personality, despite his unusual behavior. But Fred quickly proves to be more trouble than she bargained for. On his first night at the Ingalls’ farm, Fred eats part of the family’s crop, much to Charles’ horror. With growing frustration, Charles gives Laura a firm but fair ultimatum: Fred has to go.
Determined to find Fred a new home, Laura sets out to rehome the goat, but each attempt ends in disaster—and hilarity. She tries:
Mr. Edwards, who ends up in a chaotic scuffle with Fred.
Reverend Alden, whose sermon is interrupted by Fred’s unexpected and noisy arrival.
Mrs. Oleson, who is quickly horrified by Fred’s less-than-refined manners.
Doc Baker, who has no idea what to do with a goat in his clinic.
Each situation spirals into comedic mayhem, with Fred leaving a trail of chewed furniture, startled townsfolk, and general chaos behind him.
Eventually, Laura finds someone willing to take Fred, but before she hands him over, she begins to realize that Fred isn’t meant for a home or a town—he belongs with other goats, out in the wild, where he can roam free and be himself.
In a heartfelt and mature moment, Laura sets Fred free, watching him disappear into the hills to join a group of wild goats. It’s a bittersweet goodbye, but one that teaches Laura about responsibility, compassion, and doing what’s best for those we care about—even if it means saying goodbye.
