Original Air Date: November 15, 1976
“Sometimes the road back to life begins with the love of a child.”
Episode Summary
This touching two-part story begins with a personal tragedy for the Ingalls family. Charles receives word that his mother has passed away, and he travels to visit his father, Lansford Ingalls, who is now grief-stricken and emotionally broken. With his wife gone, Lansford has lost his will to live, sinking into despair and isolation.
Hoping to lift his father’s spirits, Charles convinces Lansford to return to Walnut Grove, where he can be surrounded by family—especially his grandchildren, who’ve never truly spent time with him. At first, Lansford is withdrawn and distant, but slowly, the affection and curiosity of the children—especially Laura—begin to warm his heart.
Lansford and Laura form a special bond, strengthened by their shared love of horses and storytelling. Spending time on the farm, telling tales, and offering guidance to the children begins to reignite Lansford’s zest for life.
But their relationship is shaken by a sudden tragedy. Laura’s beloved horse, Bunny, suffers a serious accident. Lansford tries to comfort Laura and promises that Bunny will be fine—but he knows the truth. Bunny’s injuries are too severe, and when Lansford is forced to put the horse down, Laura is devastated.
Feeling betrayed and furious, Laura lashes out at her grandfather, accusing him of lying and of taking away the animal she loved most. Deeply hurt and believing he has caused more harm than good, Lansford quietly leaves Walnut Grove, returning to the road alone.
But Laura, in time, begins to understand the painful decision her grandfather had to make. Realizing her anger was misplaced and fueled by grief, she sets out to find Lansford and bring him home, showing a level of maturity, forgiveness, and love that mirrors the man he used to be.
