The Race
Season 3, Episode 3
Original Air Date: October 4, 1976
“Winning is sweet—but integrity makes it meaningful.”
Episode Summary
Excitement builds in Walnut Grove as the town prepares for the annual fair, where one of the biggest events is the much-anticipated horse race. Laura Ingalls and her beloved horse Bunny are the clear favorites to win, known for their strong bond and spirited teamwork.
However, not everyone is eager to see Laura succeed. Harriet Oleson, determined that Nellie should win at all costs, buys her daughter a sleek and expensive thoroughbred named Sparks. Harriet even raises the stakes by offering a prized family silver cup as the trophy, making the race more competitive—and personal—than ever.
Just before the event, Laura and Bunny are called upon to help fetch Doc Baker for an urgent medical matter. The long, hard ride leaves Bunny exhausted, and it appears that Laura may have to forfeit the race. But Bunny, as loyal and determined as her rider, rallies at the starting line, unwilling to give up without a fight.
The race is intense and neck-and-neck, with Laura and Nellie both pushing their horses to the limit. In the final moments, Laura and Bunny pull ahead, crossing the finish line in a thrilling victory that has the entire town cheering.
Despite the competition—and Harriet’s underhanded motives—Laura chooses grace over gloating. She returns the Olesons’ family silver cup, knowing that winning doesn’t require taking something that was never truly hers. Her humility and sportsmanship earn even more admiration than the win itself.
