Episode Summary
In this powerful and emotionally intense episode, Caroline Ingalls is left alone at home for a few days while Charles and the girls head out on a trip, leaving her time to finish preparing pies for the upcoming church fair. At first, all seems well—until a small scratch on her leg begins to ache and slow her down.
As the hours pass, the scratch worsens. Caroline begins to feel unusually fatigued, and by evening, she’s feverish and weak. While trying to bring the cow back into the barn during a stormy night, she collapses in the mud and rain, her condition deteriorating quickly. Alone and in pain, Caroline drags herself back inside, but things go from bad to worse.
Over the next day, infection spreads, and Caroline begins to suffer hallucinations and fainting spells. Desperate and delirious, she prays, reads scripture, and begins to contemplate a horrific decision: amputating her own leg, recalling a passage she once read in the Bible about sacrifice to preserve life.
Meanwhile, Reverend Alden and Mrs. Foster stop by to check on her, but find the door locked. Assuming she has gone out, they leave—unaware that Caroline is collapsed just feet away behind the door, unable to speak or call out.
When Reverend Alden crosses paths with Charles, they realize something is wrong, and Charles races back home. He finds Caroline in dire condition, having lanced the infected leg herself in a last-ditch effort to survive, with nothing but her faith to guide her.
Doc Baker is called and arrives just in time to treat her. Though weak and exhausted, Caroline pulls through, her fierce will to live and unwavering trust in God helping her survive what could have been a fatal illness.
