Episode Summary
In this touching episode, Mary Ingalls earns the opportunity to compete in a statewide mathematics competition in Minneapolis, a huge honor that brings pride and excitement to the entire community of Walnut Grove. However, Charles Ingalls is heartbroken to realize he can’t afford the train fare and hotel expenses to send her.
Moved by Mary’s accomplishment and understanding what it would mean for the town, the Walnut Grove Town Council votes to cover the costs, making Mary their official representative. She sets off with Ma by her side, full of nerves, excitement—and pressure.
Back at home, Laura wrestles with feelings of jealousy. She admires Mary’s talents and goodness, but can’t help feeling inferior. To ease the tension, Charles gives Laura new responsibilities while Ma and Mary are away—like cooking, sewing, and running the household. Laura tries her hardest to shine in her own way, but things don’t go smoothly. Despite her best efforts, she burns the food, struggles with sewing, and feels like she’s failing.
Meanwhile, in Minneapolis, Mary gives it her all in the competition but ultimately finishes second, narrowly missing first place. She is crushed, believing she’s disappointed the entire town that had placed its faith in her.
But when she returns home, Mary is met with a hero’s welcome. The town is overjoyed, proud of her efforts, and celebrates her dedication and achievement. Charles reminds Mary that winning isn’t everything—and doing your best is more than enough.
