The Runaway Caboose
Season 2, Episode 16
Original Air Date: February 11, 1976
“Sometimes it takes courage, quick thinking—and a fast horse—to save the day.”
Episode Summary
In this action-packed and suspenseful episode, Mary and Laura Ingalls and Carl Sanderson Edwards (Mr. Edwards’ adopted son) join Charles Ingalls and Mr. Edwards on a supply trip to Springfield, where they visit the train depot to handle business.
While the adults are occupied, the children explore the yard and innocently climb into a caboose parked on a siding. But curiosity turns to terror when the caboose, unhitched and unsecured, suddenly begins to roll downhill, picking up speed as it heads toward a deadly curve—and a potential collision with a train coming from Sleepy Eye.
Back at the depot, panic sets in when Charles and Edwards discover the children are missing. Realizing the danger, Mr. Edwards rides hard to a rail switch, hoping to divert the caboose to a safer track. But despite his speed and determination, he doesn’t reach the switch in time.
Meanwhile, Charles races to intercept the oncoming train, pushing his horse to the limit. He arrives just in time, boards the train, and warns the crew about the runaway caboose. Together, they work to reverse the train, slow its speed, and gently collide with the caboose to bring it to a stop—just before disaster strikes.
The children are rescued, shaken but safe, and Charles and Mr. Edwards breathe a sigh of relief. The event becomes a sobering reminder of how quickly danger can arise and how calm thinking, teamwork, and bravery can save lives in even the most harrowing circumstances.
