The Spring Dance
Season 2, Episode 6
Original Air Date: October 29, 1975
“Sometimes, if you want something special… you’ve got to be brave enough to ask for it.”
Episode Summary
Spring has arrived in Walnut Grove, and with it comes the excitement of the annual Spring Dance. For both Laura Ingalls and Grace Snider, the event becomes more than just a social gathering—it turns into a mission of the heart.
Laura hopes her schoolmate Henry Sanderson will ask her to the dance, but he shows no interest in girls, let alone her. Not one to sit back, Laura enlists Willie Oleson in a plan to make Henry jealous by pretending they’re courting. Meanwhile, Grace is waiting on shy and bashful Isaiah Edwards to make a move—but when he doesn’t, she turns to Doc Baker to play the part of a suitor and stir up a bit of jealousy herself.
Both plans go sideways. Instead of prompting admiration or affection, their strategies only bring about confusion and unintended hurt feelings. With the big night approaching and no invitations in sight, Laura and Grace each decide to take matters into their own hands and do something unexpected for the time—they ask the men themselves.
In the end, Laura goes to the dance with Henry after all, and Mr. Edwards finally comes around and invites Grace, marking the beginning of a sweet and slow-burning courtship.
